Why do I come back to Canada?

I've been back here for a week now.

When I traveled to Canada for the first time almost exactly four years ago, it was love at first sight. It was different from Germany. Many things are bigger, such as the buildings, the cars and the packaging in the supermarket. I like it when places are different and I can see and feel the diversity of the world.

A few days ago, friends asked me why I keep returning to Canada. I didn't have an immediate answer to this question and it still haunts my mind.

Why do I keep coming back?

  • Nature & Wildlife: Nature is so beautiful and diverse. On Vancouver Island alone there are rainforests, there is the roaring Pacific Ocean that attracts surfers from all over the world. There are snow-capped mountains and the calm sea between the many islands.

  • People: I come back because of the people I have grown very fond of and enjoy spending time with. Most of them have traveled a lot, are interested and take me into their culture.

  • Culture: I find the people here more friendly. During a walk or a hike, people smile when they see each other, sometimes a "Hello" or "Hi" passes their lips. You get into conversation with strangers much more often, which I always find fascinating. For me, Canadians are true artists of small talk without it being funny. Short questions like "How are you?" or "How's it going?" lead to business contacts, acquaintances and friendships. It makes me feel less alone, even though I don't know many people here. In terms of jobs, people can try out a lot more here. There doesn't have to be a common thread in the CV, I think that's great!

It's the beauty of nature and the feeling I get when I'm in Canada. For me, it feels like I'm coming home.
